Knee surgery: new surgical robot at Privatklinik Bethanien
The Swiss private hospital Privatklinik Bethanien, which belongs to Swiss Medical Network, has introduced the VRAS surgical robot from Johnson & Johnson to expand its medical infrastructure. The robot assists surgeons during knee replacement implant surgery. ‘As the only private hospital in the Zurich region to do so, we are emphasising our commitment to benefiting from medical innovations and using the latest technologies,’ says Glen George, CEO of Privatklinik Bethanien. ‘This is how we ensure that our patients always receive the best possible care.’
VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Solutions (VRAS) helps the surgical team to implant knee prostheses as accurately as possible: at the start of the operation, data is collected that the robot uses to determine the exact size, range of motion and stability of the knee joint. During the operation, the robot enables the surgeon to make very precise bone cuts based on the data generated, as well as to simulate and adjust the function of the knee prosthesis on the computer. The implantation is only carried out after the robot has simulated ideal stability and functionality of the knee prosthesis.
On Monday 27 January, the first operation using the VRAS took place at Privatklinik Bethanien, under the direction of Dr Philipp Neidenbach, specialist in orthopaedic surgery and traumatology of the musculoskeletal system, and a member of the Swiss Medical Association (FMH). ‘This first robot-assisted implantation of a knee prosthesis marks the beginning of a new era in endoprosthetics at Privatklinik Bethanien," said Dr Neidenbach. He expects the function and durability of knee prostheses and thus patient satisfaction to increase further. Dr Neidenbach and other experts at the clinic are available for background discussions and interviews.
Swiss Medical Network already relies on the ‘VRAS’ at the Siloah, Ars Medica and now also at the Bethanien sites. In order to offer patients the best possible orthopaedic treatment, the ‘VELYS™ Robotic-Assisted Solutions (VRAS)’ will also be introduced at the Genolier, Lindberg and Rosenklinik sites. This makes Swiss Medical Network the largest network in Switzerland to offer this modern robot-assisted surgery.
